Healthy Lifestyle Tips - Things you’ll want to consider doing for healthy living

Healthy lifestyles seem to be all the rage these days.  You read about the idea in magazines.  You hear about it in the numerous infomercials on TV.  You see what seems to qualify as healthy living in some of your friends and coworkers.  Still, there is an unknown as to what it means to create a lifestyle of health.
We are going to provide some five tips to help you determine what healthy living means for you to assist you on your way.

1.    Nutrition –
Nutrition will likely be at the top of everyone’s list for a tip to healthy living.  We may offer a unique approach to it when it comes to determining the appropriate nutrition for you.

While there are standards established for the typical person when it comes to nutrition, not every body is the same, and therefore our unique approach is to find out what works for you.

Yes, you’ll want to eat appropriate macronutrients, (protein, carbs, and healthy fats), in the right portions, but even more than that is the idea of what works for you and your body. 

For some folks, a plant-based diet works.  For others, paleo seems to be the way to go.  And still for other people, gluten-free is the way to be.  And for another group, it may be a combination of two or more of these methods.  Our Dupage Health Specialists tend to believe you want to find what works best for you and your family individually and apply that nutrition habit.  Giving your body what it needs to operate efficiently and effectively is the key to making this determination.

2.    Water –
Water consumption is another known asset of healthy living.  Even with the knowledge of the need for water, people still are consuming soda and other sugary drinks in large quantities every day.  On average a person in the US consumes 44 gallons annually of these types of liquids.

Besides helping raise your energy levels and dissolve minerals and nutrients within the body to help transport waste, water is essential for keeping the body hydrated.  Typically, a person can only survive three days without water, though some folks have been known to survive up to 8 to 10 days.  Still, the requirement is there regarding the need to hydrate and water is the best resource for hydrating the body.  Added chemicals in other drinks minimize the ability to stay hydrated and in many cases can be a detriment to that effort.

As to the amount of water to consume, the old standard of 8 glasses or a gallon a day is getting some scrutiny as of late.  However, with no real evidence to the contrary as to any new requirements, stick to the gallon a day standard, making changes based upon what your body indicates to you that it needs.  In some cases, you may need quite a bit more water, and in other, a little less is required.

3.    Exercise –
Adding this tip to the list of healthy lifestyle suggestions is a given.  Still, with the knowledge of the benefits of exercise, approximately 45 percent of Americans qualify as living a sedentary life based on the limited movement they do that equates to zero health benefits.

For many health experts, the idea is that the body was designed to move and be active.  Hectic jobs, family, schedules and other things limit the ability to move as much as we would like. Therefore exercise can help fill in in just a short period, for the movement that we should be doing throughout the day. 

Exercise keeps joints lubricated, muscles strong, the cardiovascular system working at optimum efficiency. The standard for exercise, just like water is being challenged these days what with new studies being performed.  Having said that, sticking to 30 minutes for three times a week routine is still the best recommendation on the market today.

The next item to consider when it comes to exercise is the type or modality that is used to perform it.  The answer to this question may actually be one of the easiest responses to give to all the questions asked on the topic of health.  We would suggest to try them all and not limit yourself.  Weight resistance work, cardio work, stretching and flexibility by way of Pilates and Yoga, cross training and more all play a fundamental role in overall fitness that will contribute to health.  Once more, find the ideal combination that is right for you and your body.

While you are figuring out this endeavor, don't forget to keep your children involved.  Getting kids started with proper exercise regiments for their age while they are young, helps to ensure their continued practice and commitment to fitness as part of their healthy lifestyle as they get older.

4.    Mental –
While working out your physical body to keep it in shape and provide the ability to move throughout your lifetime, working your brain is extremely important as well.  Just as there are benefits to staying strong, flexible, coordinated, and as agile as possible, there are benefits to keeping a sharp mind as well.

From 2000 to 2014, deaths associated with Alzheimer’s have increased 89%.  And while family history, age, and heredity play a role in the risk associated with disease, some things can be done to help minimize the threat of contracting the disease later in life.  Doing things to work your mind mentally is one of those things.  An active social life and robust network of friends has also been proven beneficial to the relationship of this action to your mental health being fairly obvious. 

There a many other neurological conditions of the brain that can affect your mental state as well. 5.    Spiritual –
Addressing your spiritual health is an important aspect of healthy living from a deeper internal perspective.  We begin asking the bigger questions to life As we get older, such as what the purpose of it is, what my role in the universe is, why am I here.  These are the questions that are typically managed through our spiritual side.

Spirituality doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing as religion in this aspect either.  It is more the idea of being connected to a greater source and working to understand more about who you are beyond your body to give your life purpose.  It’s the part that drives real inner peace.

Meditation is an excellent way to pursue your spiritual side.  That doesn’t necessarily require the ohms to go with it either.  It’s more about silence, closing your eyes and opening your mind and heart to see and hear the spirit within you and the force in the world in an attempt to connect with it.  For some people that force may be considered to be God, for others it is a power greater than us.  No matter how people choose to see it, the connection to the source and the role our internal being plays in that respect is the key to getting answers to those questions.

The final item to note about all of these tips is that idea that they all work together.  As an example, assistance in spiritual and mental health is provided by exercise, (especially Pilates and yoga), and proper nutrition.  Strong and positive spiritual and mental health tends to lead to wanting to do more to help our physical body like exercise, eating right and drinking water.
